Abstract

Background: The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) is widely used to assess affective states but can be lengthy for clinical contexts. Shorter validated versions are necessary for populations with limited cognitive or physical capacities. Objective: To translate, culturally adapt, and validate the short Portuguese version of PANAS (PANAS-VRP) for use in Brazil, focusing on women with breast cancer. Methods: Following established procedures for translation and cross-cultural adaptation, the PANAS-VRP was administered to a sample of 214 women undergoing breast cancer treatment. Psychometric analyses included Exploratory Factor Analysis, reliability estimation, and item discrimination. Results: The two-factor structure (positive and negative affects) was confirmed. Internal consistency was high (α > 0.85), and factor replicability and item discrimination indices were satisfactory. Model fit indices were acceptable, supporting the instrument's validity in this population. Conclusion: The PANAS-VRP demonstrated robust psychometric properties and is suitable for clinical use in Brazilian women with breast cancer.
