Abstract

This study explores the lived experiences of individuals with chronic illnesses in Nigeria, focusingon the physical, psychological, and emotional challenges they encounter. Through in-depthinterviews with six patients at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, we examine how chronicconditions influence self-concept, mental health, and overall quality of life. Key themes includediagnostic experiences, mental health impacts, societal misconceptions, and coping mechanismssuch as family support, faith, and personal resilience. Despite stigma and limited access topsychological services, participants reported a reshaped perspective on life, emphasizing gratitudeand humility. The findings highlight the emotional and psychological burdens of chronic illness ina resource-constrained setting like Nigeria, underscoring the need for enhanced awareness,integrated support systems, and holistic healthcare approaches to improve outcomes for affectedindividuals.
