Abstract

This chapter focuses on multidisciplinary teaching strategies for open qualitative research. It addresses open science values (transparency, reproducibility, and inclusivity), practices (preregistration, replication, data sharing, etc.), and class activities. Teaching qualitative open science is more effectively accomplished when researchers conceptualize scientific processes as expressions of human cognition and various types of labor with the goal of creating usable and reliable documentation for posterity. This chapter covers practices developed within qualitative paradigms (reflexivity, audit trails, negative case analysis, etc.) and offers suggestions for how to lead diverse populations of students through the logic and application of these paradigms. Emphasizing contextual integrity, the chapter explores how to ethically balance openness with participant confidentiality and cultural sensitivity. While this chapter focuses on qualitative perspectives, these perspectives and practices are also relevant and beneficial to those working with quantitative data and methods.
