Abstract

Aha Moments are characterized by a sudden and often affectively charged shift in understanding that transforms confusion into clarity. Researchers are increasingly interested in the role that Aha moments may have in facilitating improvements in mental health, but the literature thus far has largely relied on samples that are Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD). It is critical to expand beyond these samples to understand whether, and how, Aha moments occur in other cultural contexts. In this brief report, we analyzed data from a cross-sectional survey of 2,613 adult participants across thirteen countries. Participants indicated whether they experienced an Aha moment, what type of Aha moment they experienced, and how significant the moment was to them on a scale of 1-5. We found that participants in Brazil were more likely to report experiencing Aha moments, selected more types, and rated them as highly significant compared to participants in other countries, whereas participants in Ukraine and Pakistan generally reported fewer and less impactful Aha moments, compared to participants in other countries. Although exploratory, these findings emphasize the importance of considering cultural context when researching Aha moments.
