Abstract

This paper employs a SWOT analysis to explore the theoretical legitimacy and market-place validity of a new integrated humanistic-behavioural model. While it accepts that, historically, this synthesis is viewed in a negative or hostile manner, it asserts such an approach is feasible. It concludes there are no theoretical grounds for hostility to this synthesis and remains unclear as to why such an initiative has not received further interest.Furthermore, it argues not only are humanistic and behavioural principles non-contradictory they are complementary, and believes HBT can offer an alternative to CBT which has a monopoly within agency and health-care based therapy providers. Equally, while stressing the criticality of a quantitative methodology to the success of this project, this paper accepts such a break-through may never occur.
