This paper proposes the Layered Instinct Hypothesis, a novel conceptual framework suggesting thatinstincts in humans are hierarchically organized across multiple neuroanatomical and functionallayers, including not only subcortical reflexes but also cortical drives. The hypothesis challengestraditional dualistic views that separate instinctual behavior from higher-order cognitive processessuch as free will.
