Abstract

Motif mapping is a disability-informed counseling modality that integrates trauma-informedcare, narrative therapy, strengths-based theory, and disability justice to support symbolic healingand narrative sovereignty. Developed through lived experience and clinical training, the modalityinvites clients to define and evolve personal motifs—such as tattoos, metaphors, or visualemblems—as anchors for emotional regulation, identity reconstruction, and systemic resistance. The therapist’s role is collaborative and non-interpretive, protecting symbolic autonomy andcultural integrity across diverse client populations. Motif mapping is adaptable for disabled andneurodivergent individuals, and its structure accommodates expressive barriers, sensorysensitivities, and mobility-related needs. The modality’s applications span individual therapy, supervision, curriculum design, and telehealth, with ethical integration of AI tools to enhanceaccess without compromising authorship. This manuscript offers a conceptual framework andpractice-based guidance for motif mapping, contributing to inclusive clinical care and counseloreducation.
