Abstract

This study reviewed the specifications required or desired for constructing comparative scales that allow for high-precision psychometric measurements while reducing social desirability response bias and facilitating ease of response. The specifications of seven aspects were introduced in detail: the number of traits measured by the scale, traits measured by the compared items, number of items per trait, number of combinations of the traits measured by the compared items, direction in which the compared items measure the traits, compared items’ social desirability, and ease of response. The comparative scale’s practical construction along with specifications was illustrated by developing a Big Five personality test. Finally, future research directions in comparative scales were discussed.
