Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition affecting individuals across various age groups and cultural backgrounds. Although awareness has increased, negative attitudes and stereotypes create barriers to necessary health care. This study examines the challenges faced by caregivers of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Myanmar, specifically focusing on communication issues, gaps in care, and unmet needs. Methods: A mixed-methods survey was used to obtain responses from caregivers. Specifically, the survey included structured questions related to quantitative trends in their health care experiences, followed by open-ended questions to provide an opportunity for caregivers to respond so their themes could be identified. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, while themes emerged from qualitative analysis. Results: The survey revealed considerable difficulty in communication between the caregiver and the health care provider. Additionally, low levels of tailored, holistic care, and poor involvement in decision-making were identified as issues, as well as unmet needs in sensory sensitivities and behavioral issues. Conclusion: These findings highlight that health services need to be more patient-centered and incorporate the biopsychosocial model. Improving communication with providers, training staff, and involving caregivers more can all help to reduce stigma and improve the care provided to those with ASD. Overall, this can bring better health results, and a better quality of life for both the patient and the caregiver.
