Abstract

Students represent the next generation of potential researchers. Their first exposure to research as undergraduates can be a developmental experience that influences the likelihood they continue with research and establishes habits they are likely to carry forward in postgraduate work and beyond. As more undergraduate programmes have begun to include open science content in their curricula, embedding open science practices in student research is a natural extension of course material. Supervisors can empower students to conduct rigorous and transparent research by using a range of practices across the research pipeline, from preregistration to the sharing of data and materials. This chapter discusses approaches and recommendations for incorporating responsible research practices into student research and considers the impacts of doing so on both the quality of research and the student experience.
