Abstract

Human wellbeing, deeply intertwined with human behaviors, has experienced a notable surge, with positive psychology emerging as a promising approach to enhancement. The integration of positive psychology with technology holds substantial potential; however, few studies have fully leveraged the pedagogical potential of technologies to foster wellbeing. Additionally, there is a lack of positive psychology interventions aimed at young adults in non-Western contexts. This study addresses these gaps by developing, implementing, and validating WeThrive, a technology-integrated, culturally adapted positive psychology intervention tailored for Asian young adults. A central feature of WeThrive is its integrated online co-creation approach. A mixed-methods approach with a pre-post-follow-up design was employed to investigate the effectiveness of the intervention. Results from quantitative analyses demonstrated that WeThrive significantly improved young adults’ overall wellbeing, positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment, while reducing negative feelings. Qualitative analyses identified key factors contributing to the effectiveness of WeThrive, including active engagement in meaningful co-creations, social connection, and positivity and agency. Findings of the study provide new insights into the effectiveness of integrating online co-creation in positive psychology interventions, particularly in an Asian context. It enriches the understanding of the use of computers by broadening knowledge of its psychological effects. Furthermore, it highlights online co-creation as an effective component in designing wellbeing enhancement strategies.
