Abstract

Although dialogues are occurring in academia and popular culture surrounding masculinity, very little research has tried to understand this discourse. Professional counselors need to be able to address these dialogues with male clients; thus, the aim of the present study was to better understand them, especially as they occur within English language newspapers. A corpus linguistics design was employed, and a logDice study on collocations was conducted in Sketch Engine, with the targeted lemmas being “manhood” and “masculinity.” Change over time was also examined through a Mann-Kendall test for monotonic trend and a Theil-Sen regression. Top collocates for “masculine” and “masculinity” were “feminine” and “femininity”, with the top collocate for “manhood” being “boyhood”. Change over time analysis resulted in non-significant results. Themes among the collocates included gender polarity, conflicted masculinities, and the transition to manhood. Implications for counselors and researchers are discussed. Keywords: masculinity, manhood, news, English, counseling
