Abstract

Mental disorders affect nearly every fifth person. In about one third of the cases, there is no adequate treatment. Circuit modulation with low-intensity ultrasound provides new noninvasive and targeted treatment option. Low-intensity, sustained ultrasound promotes circuit reorganization specifically at the desired deep brain targets, thus providing the necessary reset. In this work, we will quantify the magnitude and duration of these neuroplastic effects, and apply the stimuli to the amygdala to reduce anxiety in primates. The approach, based on 650 kHz ultrasound, is projected to translate into clinical trials performed on the Insightec brain system.
