Abstract

The burgeoning domain of the Internet of Things (IoT) has ushered in a paradigm shift in how data is generated, processed, and utilized, placing unprecedented demands on traditional cloud-based computational infrastructures. Edge computing emerges as a pivotal technology in this context, positioning computational resources at or near the data source to alleviate latency issues, reduce bandwidth consumption, and enhance privacy and security. This review examines the critical role edge computing plays in augmenting the computational efficiencies at the network edge, particularly in IoT environments. By offloading tasks traditionally reserved for cloud data centers closer to the IoT devices, edge computing facilitates real-time data processing, thus enabling more responsive and scalable IoT applications. Moreover, this review explores the synergies between edge computing and IoT, addressing the challenges and poten- tial solutions in integrating these technologies effectively. Analyzing case studies and recent advancements, we identify key trends and future directions that can further revolutionize edge-IoT systems towards achieving robust and efficient computational architectures.
