Abstract

This paper examines the modern emergence of "Taíno" identity in Puerto Rico through the lens of colonial documentation, ethnohistory, and cultural propaganda. Drawing from archival research, academic critique, and firsthand experience, it exposes the 20th-century fabrication of Taínoism as a race-shifting movement rooted in political opportunism, erasure of Boricua identity, and American cultural influence. This work aims to provide tools and clarity for researchers, educators, and institutions committed to historical truth and the protection of Caribbean heritage.
