Recent years have seen a decline in school readiness, which has significant long-term effects on children’s educational and life outcomes, as well as creating immediate resource challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic has further intensified these disparities. Early identification of developmental delays is critical to providing targeted support and enhancing school readiness.Traditional screening tools provide limited insights into a child’s development and are often influenced by factors such as informer bias, subjectivity and a disconnect between health and education systems. To address this, the present study improves upon the Developmental Profiling Tool (DPT), initially trialled in the UK in 2021-22. Developed by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, the DPT offers a comprehensive assessment of children’s development at school entry. 51 educators and 391 children participated in the study. Through content analysis, the enhanced DPT includes 58 dichotomous observations and assesses seven key developmental areas: auditory skills, visual perception, internal senses and interoception, external senses, and motor coordination. When compared with standardised assessments, the DPT demonstrated robust validity and reliability, effectively mapping children’s strengths and developmental areas needing support, and signposting timely and targeted intervention. The DPT is a valuable resource for Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) teachers, enhancing their ability to identify and support 98-99% of four-year-olds with developmental differences. This study highlights the DPT's potential to revolutionise early childhood support, ensuring proactive rather than reactive interventions, and demonstrates significant promise in improving school readiness and educational outcomes.
