Abstract

We identify a formal inconsistency in Einstein’s 1905 derivation of \( E = mc^2 \), which remains empirically valid, by extending his thought experiment to include reflection of light in a moving frame. This modification reveals a net energy gain in the stationary frame that violates energy conservation and Lorentz invariance, despite exact four-momentum conservation. The resulting contradiction highlights a structural tension between \( E = hf \) and \( E = mc^2 \), suggesting that mass may be an emergent property. Furthermore, this contradiction poses a foundational obstacle to unification and motivates a re-examination of the fundamental definition of energy.
