Empathy has long been associated with prosocial behavior and, potentially, with the development of socially driven entrepreneurial initiatives aimed at supporting individuals in need. However, the precise nature of the relationship between empathy and entrepreneurship remains unclear. This review aims to clarify this connection by analyzing cross-sectional, survey-based studies. We begin by outlining key definitions of empathy and entrepreneurship, followed by a comprehensive overview of previous research on their intersection. We then synthesize the findings, highlighting recurring patterns and statistically supported associations. The literature points to a modest yet meaningful relationship between affective empathy and prosocial entrepreneurial motivation, though this link is often examined through narrowly defined constructs. We conclude by discussing the limitations of current evidence and recommending directions for future research, including the need for longitudinal and experimental designs to better establish causality.
