Abstract

Here I present a new ‘Law of Equilibrium’ as the first principle of the General Theory of Behavior. The Law states that the voluntary behavior of conscious organisms is guided by a universal striving for equilibrium with purpose, desire and intentionality. It is proposed that psychological homeostasis is the principal causal mechanism of behavior and behavior change. This book provides the following scientific information:–A description of the new Law of Equilibrium and its associated principles, which form the General Theory of Behavior. –A study of 26 more specific theories that resemble the General Theory. –An analysis of the results of testing 335 hypotheses from the General Theory. –A description of how the Law of Equilibrium predicts a diverse range of phenomena. –An analysis of the operation of the Law of Equilibrium in interventions at individual, societal and international relations levels. It is concluded that the Law of Equilibrium and General Theory offer a unified scientific approach for a diverse range of phenomena across Psychology as a natural science of mind and behavior.
