Abstract

This commentary reevaluates the significance of Charles Minard’s map of Napoleon’s March to Moscow, often hailed as the “best visualization ever made.” While Minard’s map effectively conveys multiple data points such as army size and geographical context it lacks the depth of narrative and real-time context that modern technologies such as maps, data visualizations, particularly in a healthcare context, can provide. This commentary then introduces various data (quantitative) and information (qualitative) sources to illustrate how modern communication technologies can enhance our understanding of events through real-time interactions. By employing advanced visualization techniques these methodologies there is potential to improve communication in a healthcare context.
