Abstract

The Dilla University Botanical and Ecotourism Garden (DUBEG), established in 2017, is a multidisciplinary initiative aimed at conserving native and endemic flora, supporting environmental education, promoting sustainable ecotourism, and facilitating applied research. Located in a biodiversity-rich zone in southern Ethiopia, the garden spans over 137 hectares and intersects three regional administrative boundaries. This study assesses the current status, achievements, challenges, and development trajectory of DUBEG. Through qualitative assessments and stakeholder consultation, we documented over 600 plant species, with infrastructure developments including laboratories, nurseries, thematic gardens, and community engagement platforms. While opportunities in ecotourism and research are evident, constraints such as limited funding, infrastructure gaps, and environmental threats remain. This paper provides a baseline scientific overview and strategic recommendations for the future development of botanical gardens in Ethiopia and similar contexts. Keywords: Botanical garden, biodiversity conservation, Ethiopia, ecotourism, native flora, environmental education
