Through climate change, humanity is facing a self-inflicted environmental catastrophe. However, itis also a catastrophe for science. The current crisis endangers science by impairing our ability toconduct science through damages to society and infrastructure. It endangers the future applicabilityof science by drastically and irreversibly altering the once stable conditions on Earth. Moreover, through climate denial it also highlights problems with the recognition and implementation ofscientific progress. Despite manifold warnings of the looming catastrophe, scientists have not beenable to prevent it. Instead of continuing with actions that have not been sufficient in the past, weshould embrace methods that we ourselves have proven to be effective in past crises to trigger thenecessary societal change: activism and civil disobedience.
