We review the increasing focus on naturalistic behaviour in neuroscience, urging caution around vague and inconsistent uses of the term.We then propose a set of principles to focus on clear, explicit definitions and relevant questions in behavioural research, rather than pursuing naturalistic designs as an inherent marker of scientific rigour or validity.
