Abstract

Female lawyers in Pakistan face a hostile courtroom environment and institutionalbias that discourages their participation in litigation. Courts are male-dominated, and femaleadvocates routinely report sexual harassment, intimidation, and condescension by clients, police and even judges. Basic facilities and support are often absent; for example, most courtslack separate restrooms for women or any maternity/childcare provisions. Harassment lawsexist on paper but are unenforced, leaving women with no recourse. These barriers force manywomen to quit practice, reinforcing the legal profession’s “boys’ club” culture and underminingaccess to justice for female litigants.
