This chapter provides an overview of the state of the art of the ways in which the meaning of sounds — traditionally regarded as a paradox — are studied within linguistics. The chapter touches on Peircean semiotics, linguistic systematicity (e.g., phonaesthemes and sound symbolism), linguistic iconicity (experimental approaches, sound iconicity), and the iconic lexicon (onomatopoeia, ideophones). Finally, a case study on the phonaestheme -ang /ɑŋ/ in Mandarin Chinese concludes the chapter.
