Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this scoping review was to identify common risk factors contributing to falls among older adults living in Asian communities.Design/Methodology/Approach: This scoping review involved a comprehensive search of various databases, including Medicus, PUBMED, Scilit, ScienceDirect, Ebsco, CINAHL, Sage, Garuda, Emerald Insight, and Google Scholar, spanning the years 2013 to 2023. The review followed the Arksey and O'Malley Scoping Review Framework and adhered to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines for optimal reporting. Terms based on the Population Concept Context (PCC) model were used, combining keywords with Boolean operators AND and OR, along with MeSH terms. Both qualitative and quantitative primary data studies were included, while reviews, study protocols, and review studies were excluded.Findings: Articles from 10 databases were obtained and underwent a title-filtering process based on the research questions. Relevant titles and abstracts were collected using Mendeley, which filtered out duplicates before exporting the articles to Rayyan for re-selection and further duplicate removal. Irrelevant articles, including intervention studies, research protocols, and literature reviews, were excluded, leaving 11 research studies for analysis. This review highlights conditions that may increase the risk of falls among older adults with cataracts, providing valuable insights for nurses to consider when designing future studies.Practical Implications: Identifying the general risk factors for falls among older adults with cataracts can help nurses develop effective strategies to prevent falls in hospital settings. This can facilitate the implementation of appropriate actions to manage unforeseen events and unintentional incidents within the nurse's work environment.Originality/Value: While several studies have reviewed risk factors for falls among community-dwelling older adults, most have been conducted in Western countries, with none focusing on older adults with cataracts in Asia. This review addresses the gap, considering the unique factors contributing to the risk of falls in different regions.
