Abstract

This commentary updates aspects of the proposed shift from shared to collaborative decision making in healthcare, highlighting the framework first proposed by O’Grady and Jadad (2010) fifteen years ago. The model involved health professionals, patients, and families working together, often using information and communication technologies. The article suggested using an organizational readiness for change framework to enhance patient partnerships. Through the case study of diabetes management, this commentary shows how collaborative discussions can align medical treatments with patients' lifestyles and preferences. However, challenges such as time constraints, limited digital literacy, and patient readiness may impede implementation. Proposed solutions include engaging family members, providing educational resources, and training healthcare providers in active listening and cultural sensitivity. By fostering open communication and respecting patient values, the healthcare system can better achieve the goals of collaborative decision making, enhancing patient autonomy and health outcomes.
