Abstract

The translation market is showing an increasing preference for a new technology-oriented translator profile, which in turn has been drastically changing over the last years. Although university training has been trying to adapt to market demands, there seems to be a serious technological gap. In the most popular translation competence models, technologies play a central and transversal role, but curricula do not yet reflect this paradigm shift. The main aim of this article is to describe an empirical study that investigates and defines (with quantitative and qualitative methods): 1) the current scenario regarding translation technology training in Spanish university, and 2) which are the technology requirements demanded by the professional translation market and language industries nowadays. Based on the results of this study, our goal is to offer a new pedagogical framework proposal that integrates technologies in the translation classroom and that is in line with the professional reality of the industry.
