Abstract

Depression is the most commonly observed and extensively studied mental disorder. Cognitive therapy is recognized as an effective treatment for depression. However, despite its proven effectiveness, therapy can be prolonged, sometimes requiring years to achieve positive results. In some cases, positive outcomes are never achieved. Relapses also occur. All of this suggests that the true causes of depression remain hidden from researchers. This is evidenced by the existence of several theories regarding the origin of depression. One of these, the Rational-Emotive Theory of Depression (RET), in our opinion, comes closest to the core of the issue by linking the roots of depression to the patient's philosophical outlook. A similar approach is demonstrated by Yalom's existential psychotherapy. This article attempts to expand this perspective.
