This study explores the clay potter community's socio-economic dynamics and evolving livelihood patterns in Pirganj, Rangpur, Bangladesh. Despite their historical significance and cultural heritage, potters in this region confront numerous challenges threatening their traditional craft and economic stability. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative surveys, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and case studies to analyze the community's current state comprehensively. Findings indicate notable improvements in human capital—health, nutrition, and education—which have fostered social mobility and economic resilience. However, these advancements have also led to declining traditional pottery practices as younger generations pursue alternative careers. Physical and natural capital assessments reveal inadequate housing, poor transportation infrastructure, limited sanitation facilities, and environmental challenges like deforestation and natural calamities disrupting agriculture and pottery production. Key vulnerabilities identified include the scarcity and rising costs of raw materials, technological innovations favoring mass-produced alternatives, limited government support, lack of wholesale buyers, and media influence promoting modern lifestyles. These factors collectively undermine the pottery sector's sustainability. The study recommends multifaceted strategies, including specialized training programs, financial assistance during crises, establishing reliable market linkages, enhancing support from government and NGOs, and raising public awareness of traditional clay products' cultural and economic value. Additionally, promoting youth engagement in pottery through incentives and educational initiatives is emphasized to ensure the craft's continuity. Conclusively, preserving the clay potter community in Pirganj is crucial for maintaining Bangladesh's rich cultural heritage and fostering economic diversity. The study highlights the need for collaborative efforts between governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations, and the community to implement sustainable solutions that support traditional artisans' cultural and economic vitality.
