OBJECTIVE : This study aims to translate the "Chronic Disease Adaptation Scale" into Chinese and test its psychometric properties in the elderly patients with chronic diseases in China. METHODS : Following Brislin's translation and cross-cultural adaptation model, the Chronic Disease Adaptation Scale was localized through the method of forward and backward translation. 435 elderly individuals were conveniently selected in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province as the research subjects. Item analysis was used for discriminant validity analysis, and internal reliability, external reliability, content validity, exploratory factor, confirmatory factor, and multi-group tests were used for reliability and validity analysis. RESULTS : Through exploratory factor analysis, 5 factor eigenvalues were greater than 1, and they were named as denial behavior of the disease, compliance behavior of the disease, active participation, emotional support for the disease, and emotional support. The cumulative variance contribution rate was 72.853%. Using confirmatory factor analysis, the results showed that the chi-square degree of freedom ratio (c2 / df) was 2224.030, the approximate root mean square error (RMSEA) was 0.027, both within the standard range. The multi-group analysis showed that the model fitting effect of the Chronic Disease Adaptation Scale was similar in different genders. The critical ratio (CR) of each item was -16.156 to -31.05, and the correlation coefficient (r) between the item and the total score was 0.532 to 0.679 (P < 0.001). The Cronbach α coefficient of the total scale was 0.913, and the Cronbach α coefficients of the five factors were 0.850, 0.862, 0.884, 0.827, and 0.870, respectively. The test-retest reliability of the total scale was 0.945. Conclusion : The Chinese version of the Chronic Disease Adaptation Scale has good reliability and validity and is suitable for measuring the adaptation ability of chronic diseases in the Chinese elderly population.
