The monocot genus Hedychium J.Koenig (Zingiberaceae) is renowned for its enduring taxonomic uncertainties. Here, we provide comprehensive morphological descriptions and notes for four Roscoean names ( H. aurantiacum Roscoe, H. longifolium Roscoe, H. maximum Roscoe and H. subditum Turrill) originally described during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries from materials collected in the Indian subcontinent. Additionally, we provide lectotypification for H. maximum and comparisons of all four species with morphologically similar taxa. Despite repeated efforts to revise the genus, these four species remain enigmatic in their taxonomic circumscriptions.
