Abstract

This article investigates the inherent conflict between fingerprint image enhancement and presentation attack detection (PAD). While enhancement techniques strive to remove artifacts and restore ridge clarity for better recognition, PAD methods focus on identifying irregularities to detect fake or altered fingerprints. Through extensive experimental analysis, the authors explore the interplay between these approaches and assess whether simultaneous implementation is feasible. The study highlights that while both strategies aim to optimize biometric system performance, their objectives often contradict. Therefore, a hybrid solution involving hardware-based PAD and software-driven image enhancement may offer the most robust and practical path forward in real-world scenarios.
