The Global Value Chains of CERN procurement - A Time Series Analysis for 1999-2024

The aim of the present report is to analyse the global value chains associated with CERN's expenditures between 1999 and 2024, using detailed procurement microdata combined with the time-series version of a multi-regional input–output model (ADAGIO). The report quantifies direct, indirect, and induced value-added effects across countries and sectors, and tracks how these effects have evolved alongside major structural changes in global trade. Key findings show that while CERN procurement is overwhelmingly awarded to firms from Member States, the associated economic benefits are substantially more internationalised once global value chains are taken into account. In particular, indirect and induced effects extend well beyond CERN membership, reflecting increasing global integration and the growing role of upstream suppliers, most notably in East Asia. At the same time, the analysis highlights the distinctive position of CERN host states and the structural reasons for their comparatively high share of economic effects.
