Effect of source-based tele-dentistry using AI-generated educational videos on awareness of Egyptian children and caregivers regarding risks of early childhood caries; Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract

Background Tele-dentistry is a relatively new approach that helps the challenged population with accessibility and socioeconomic problems to get the advice and consultations required to manage preventable oral health issues such as dental caries and periodontal disease. The current study assesses awareness changes after using AI videos as source-based tele-dentistry. Methods An AI-generated video describing important advice about prevention of early childhood caries, diet modifications, and first molar hypomineralisation was sent to children and caregivers through kindergartens and clinics, and an electronic questionnaire to assess awareness was completed before and after watching the videos once and twice. Results 70 children and 67 caregivers were included in the current study. Overall reliability of the parents and children electronic questionnaire was assessed with Cronbach’s alpha values between 0.709 and 0.889, respectively. Children’s awareness, including Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice domains heatmap analysis, showed a significant positive correlation with completion time of the e-questionnaire, while the educational level had a critical influence on the parents’ KAP scores. Conclusions Within the limitations of the current study, AI-generated educational videos showed a promising source for tele-dentistry enhancing practices and attitudes towards oral health issues in both children and caregivers and signify important collaboration with pediatric physicians and nursery houses.
