Objective This study aims to explore how trait anger influences aggressive behavior in college students, as well as the role of anger rumination and emotion regulation in this process. Methods A survey was conducted with 1,052 college students using the Trait Anger Questionnaire, Aggressive Behavior Questionnaire, Anger Rumination Scale, and Emotion Regulation Ability Questionnaire. Results Trait anger, anger rumination, and aggressive behavior were significantly positively correlated, with correlation values all exceeding 0.7. Emotion regulation was significantly negatively correlated with trait anger, anger rumination, and aggressive behavior, with correlation coefficients of -0.530, -0.516, and − 0.522, respectively. The results of the bootstrap mediation effect test showed that anger rumination significantly mediated the relationship between trait anger and aggressive behavior, with an effect value of 0.217, accounting for 29.285% of the total effect. Emotion regulation also significantly mediated the relationship between trait anger and aggressive behavior, with an effect value of 0.040, accounting for 5.398% of the total effect. Furthermore, the chain mediation effect of anger rumination and emotion regulation was significant, with an effect value of 0.024, accounting for 3.239% of the total effect. Conclusion Trait anger in college students positively predicts aggressive behavior and also influences it through the chain mediation of anger rumination and emotion regulation.
