Ecological governance is an important tool to curb environmental degradation in the arid regions of northwest China. Given the crucial role of farmers in supporting the environmental health of rural communities, this study aims to clarify the factors that influence farmers’ intentions and behaviour in participating in environmental governance. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to analyse data from 315 farmers in Changji City, Xinjiang. The model examines the influence of emotional attachment to the environment, awareness of responsibility for the environment and perceived ease of participation on farmers’ intention to participate in environmental governance. The results suggest that emotional and practical factors significantly increase intentions to participate, while some social norms and perceived effectiveness of governance have limited effects. These findings emphasise the need for interventions that strengthen practical support and emotional engagement and address both psychological and structural barriers to promote sustainable environmental practises in rural areas.
