Abstract

Despite massive control measures, eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems keeps worsening worldwide. While a growing number of global N and P datasets exist, no global gridded data on eutrophication of inland surface waters is available. We developed a method that produces gridded maps for eutrophication from total N and P data. Our motivation is to foster the inclusion of eutrophication in quantitative global and regional scale water related studies, from which they have been almost entirely absent thus far. We also developed analogous methods for biochemical oxygen demand and total dissolved solids.
