Abstract

The HyFlex delivery model gained prominence in higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic as a solution to ensure continuity of education and meet diverse student needs. As the educational landscape evolves, it is crucial to assess HyFlex's effectiveness, challenges, and benefits, especially with the integration of AI tools that raise concerns regarding academic integrity and assessment methods. This study examines the opportunities and obstacles faced by faculty teaching in a HyFlex environment, its impact on student learning culture, and the influence of artificial intelligence on assessment practices. Based on semi-structured interviews with 13 faculty members at a post-secondary institution, the research explores the dual nature of HyFlex teaching, revealing that while it enhances accessibility, inclusivity, digital literacy, and active participation, it also presents significant challenges in designing effective instructional strategies for multiple delivery modes. Furthermore, the advent of AI tools (ChatGPT, Co-pilot etc.) complicates issues related to academic integrity and assessment design. Faculty perspectives emphasize the need for innovative strategies to overcome these challenges while preserving the flexibility and engagement that HyFlex offers. The study concludes with practical recommendations to improve HyFlex teaching effectiveness and adapt assessment practices to an educational landscape increasingly shaped by AI advancements.
