Abstract

A series of novel α-hydroxyphosphonates 1–4 were synthesized via the Abramov reaction under solvent-free conditions using potassium phosphate as the catalyst. The compounds were characterized using physical research methods. The molecular structures of 1 – 4 were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Analysis reveals that compounds 1 , 3 and 4 share a common O–H···O hydrogen-bonded chain motif, while the molecular chains in compound 2 are organized by halogen bonding. The nature of the substituent dictates the hierarchy of secondary interactions, leading to profoundly different crystal packing.
