Abstract

Recent advancements in healthcare technology have enhanced efficiency; however, they may concurrently diminish human interaction within nursing practice. The philosophy of caring, which prioritizes empathy, nurse presence, and holistic patient attention, is at risk of being overshadowed. This scoping review seeks to map the existing literature on efforts to sustain the philosophy of caring in nursing practice amidst technological advancements, as well as strategies employed to preserve caring values. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, SAGE, Scopus, and Web of Science using keywords such as caring philosophy, nursing practice, technology, empathy, and human presence. Studies that address nursing practice integrating technology while discussing caring values were included. The findings suggest that caring values, including human presence, empathy, holistic care, and respect for patient dignity, are frequently challenged by the predominance of technology. This review provides an overview of how the philosophy of caring can be maintained in the digital era and offers recommendations for nursing practice, education, and policy development.
