Abstract

Undoped and Eu-doped CaCl 2 transparent ceramics were successfully fabricated for the first time, and their optical and scintillation properties were systematically investigated. The PL quantum yields of the 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0% Eu-doped CaCl 2 transparent ceramics were 51, 46, 42, and 53%, respectively. Photoluminescence and scintillation spectra showed a broad emission peak at 430 nm, attributed to the 5d–4f transitions of Eu 2+ , with decay times of 0.56–1.2 μs. The 1.0% Eu-doped CaCl 2 transparent ceramic exhibited a scintillation light yield of 400 ph/5.5MeV under 241 Am α-ray irradiation. The afterglow level of this sample was measured to be 30 ppm.
