Suppression of photorespiration in forest trees has been suggested as a promising means for improving carbon sequestration. We studied a transgene-induced photorespiration bypass in poplar which resulted in expected effects on leaf biochemistry and photosynthesis but did not show evidence for elevated carbon uptake into biomass. Results highlight the importance of early field assessments and the need for further technology development.
