Abstract

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) poses a significant threat to the cattle industry. To ascertain the prevalence of BVDV in Tibetan yaks, we used a commercial ELISA kit to test 920 yak serum samples collected from eight counties in three Tibetan regions.. The results revealed an overall seroprevalence of 5.11% (95% CI: 3.78% − 6.74%). The odds ratio (OR) for infection in young cattle (< 3 years) was 2.36 (95% CI: 1.20–5.08, p-value = 0.02), indicating that young animals have a 2.36-fold higher risk of infection compared with older cattle (> 3 years). The findings suggest that BVDV is relatively prevalent in yaks in Nagqu, Lhasa, and Shigatse, with young animals showing increased susceptibility. We recommend prioritizing the protection of young yaks in future control strategies.
