Abstract

Based on a systematic review of 219 exposure trials on stone, this paper aims to learn from, and build upon past experience to improve future practice. Existing studies vary widely, but we identified three common themes: environmental drivers of deterioration, conservation treatments, biocolonization. Challenges include supporting long-term designs and ensuring comparability. Proposed priorities going forward are legacy, adaptability, design optimisation, sustainability, and upscaling to larger, longer and more complex settings.
