Abstract

The present study explores the long-term psychological effects of childhood trauma on adult attachment styles, focusing on the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and the development of attachment patterns in adulthood. Utilizing the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) questionnaire, the study assessed participants’ exposure to ten categories of childhood adversity, including emotional, physical, sexual abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction such as parental separation, domestic violence, and substance abuse. Attachment styles in adulthood—categorized as secure, anxious-preoccupied, dismissive-avoidant, and fearful-avoidant—were measured using a validated adult attachment scale. Statistical analyses, including correlation, revealed a significant relationship between high ACE scores and the prevalence of insecure attachment styles. Individuals with multiple ACEs were more likely to report difficulties in emotional closeness, fear of abandonment, avoidance of intimacy, and challenges in trusting others. Conversely, participants with lower ACE scores were more likely to demonstrate secure attachment patterns, characterized by healthy emotional regulation and interpersonal trust. The findings suggest that early traumatic experiences can have a profound and lasting influence on how individuals form and maintain relationships throughout life. The study highlights the critical need for trauma-informed interventions that address attachment-related issues in therapy and counselling. It also emphasizes the importance of early prevention and support systems for at-risk children to foster secure attachment development. The research contributes to the growing body of literature linking developmental trauma to adult relational functioning and provides a framework for clinical practitioners to better understand the underlying attachment issues that may stem from childhood adversity.
