Determination of contraceptive knowledge, attitude, and behavior among nursing students in Northern Cyprus: A cross-sectional study

Aim: This study aims to assess the level of knowledge, attitude and behavior on contraceptive method among international nursing student. Design : A cross sectional study Methods: This study applied a convenience sampling and 297 students participated. The study was conducted from January to May 2025.The data was collected with the Student Information form, the Contraceptive Knowledge Assessment (CKA), the Contraceptive Attitude Scale (CAS), and the Contraceptive Behavior Scale (CBS). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 27. Results: The CKA scores, with a mean of 8.39 (SD = 4.93) and a median of 8.00 and the interquartile range was 7. The findings reveal a limited to moderate understanding of contraception among the participants. The Nursing students CAS scores, with a mean of 106.11 (SD = 16.86) and a median of 101.00. The interquartile range was 21, suggesting a moderate variability in attitudes about contraception. The findings suggest that students predominantly expressed positive attitude regarding contraceptive use. The scores on the CBS yielding a mean of 7.56 (SD = 6.92) and a median of 8.00. The interquartile range was 12; indicating significant variability in reported contraceptive practices, these low average score showed respondents exhibited minimal utilization of contraceptive procedures. Conclusions: The result of this study indicate low level of knowledge in contraceptive procedure moderate variability in attitude about contraception and minimal utilization of contraceptive procedures. It is important to elaborate a training program tailored to this category of students to enhance their understanding and positive behavior regarding contraceptive method use. Implication for the professional: Contraceptive exploration in young population has substantial public health implications in terms of health risks.
