Intersectionality of Obesity, Socioeconomic Conditions, and Mental Well-Being in Children: A Systematic Review

Introduction: Childhood obesity is a global public health concern with significant adverse effects on physical and mental well-being. This systematic review aims to examine the impact of childhood obesity on psychological outcomes and to identify effective therapies and prevention strategies. Methods: Studies were included if they investigated the link between childhood obesity and psychological effects. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using electronic databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, and CINAHL, in accordance with specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Selected studies were analyzed using a thematic approach to gather and synthesize data. Results: The review encompassed ten studies. Childhood obesity has been associated with various adverse psychological effects, including depression, anxiety, conduct issues, behavioral problems, and low self-esteem. Strategies such as promoting healthy behaviors, addressing socioeconomic disparities, early detection and intervention, personalized treatments, and timely intervention have proven effective in improving psychological outcomes. Conclusion: Since childhood obesity significantly affects psychological well-being, effective treatments and prevention measures are essential to address this growing public health challenge. Experts recommend early detection and intervention, personalized therapies, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and tackling social and economic inequalities to improve psychological health in children with obesity.
