Purpose This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the Workshop education model based on the concept of pre-rehabilitation in the self-care of patients with permanent colostomy. Methods A single-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted. A total of 111 patients who underwent permanent colostomy surgery in our department from January to December 2024 were selected, of whom 56 were assigned to the control group and 55 to the experimental group. The patients in the control group implemented routine care and health promotion of colorectal stoma during hospitalization and 1 month after discharge, while the intervention group, after adopting the Workshop training model based on the concept of pre-rehabilitation for health promotion, set up a workshop learning group and carried out self-care ability improvement activities with the theme of replacing the stoma pouch to compare the pre-intervention and post-intervention self-care ability, stoma self-care as well as the incidence of stoma-related complications. Results The self-care ability and stoma self-care scores of the intervention group were significantly higher than those of the control group after the intervention, and the incidence of stoma-related complications in the intervention group was significantly lower than that of the control group, all of which were statistically different. Conclusion The Workshop learning model based on the concept of pre-rehabilitation is an effective health education strategy to improve self-care of patients with permanent enterostomies and to reduce the complications associated with permanent enterostomies.
