Abstract

Background This study compared USG and MRCP findings with ERCP results in patients with biliary tract disease and investigated their diagnostic reliability. Methods This cross-sectional study included 158 patients who presented with abdominal complaints. Those evaluated by USG and MRCP who then underwent therapeutic ERCP were included. Results The patients' mean age was 60.3 ± 18.4 years (range: 18–93); 66 (41.8%) were male. The most common diagnosis of ERCP was bile duct stones (57.9%). USG sensitivity/specificity vs ERCP: 50%/69.1%. MRCP sensitivity/specificity vs ERCP for CBD stones: 78.9%/44.1%. Conclusions Our findings indicate that the diagnostic sensitivity of USG is not high, whereas MRCP shows high sensitivity, especially for common bile duct stones. USG is a primary imaging modality; MRCP serves as crucial follow-up when the USG is insufficient. ERCP remains the predominant therapeutic intervention.
